The success story of The Catered Affair is a classic example of an entrepreneur evolving her avocation into her vocation.  Starting with her home size toaster oven and the compliments of her dinner party guests, Holly Safford built her business slowly and effectively.

In 1974, Safford relocated with her three young sons to Scituate, Massachusetts, where she quickly developed a reputation for flair, evident in all of her entertaining.  It was that flair that led her and two friends to team up in 1979.  Each person committed $100 seed money to the venture, which was used to cover the cost of printing a modest menu.  The recipes, “most of which none of us had made before,” came straight from cookbooks and magazines.  The initial mailing to the members of the Hingham Garden Club led to several calls.

As word spread, bookings grew and it soon became clear that The Catered Affair would need its own space.  So in 1982, they rented 1,400 square feet of space in Scituate in a converted garage.  In November 1988, The Catered Affair moved into its current home, a 15,000 square foot facility in Hingham, Massachusetts.  In 1999, Safford founded a sister company, Provender, which is a full-service kosher catering company serving New England. In addition, in the fall of 2003, The Catered Affair was awarded the food service contract at the newly renovated Peabody-Essex Museum in Salem, MA. There, the company operates a 60 seat restaurant and a food-to-go café, as well as handling all of the catered events.

Today, with just over to $8 million in sales, more than 75 full-time employees and 250 part-time employees, The Catered Affair stands as the premier full-service catering company in Greater Boston. The company is known for its pre-event organization, creative and inspired cuisine, tailored to the taste and style of each client, as well as a professional, well-trained staff.  Whether the function is a buffet for 25 or a black tie dinner for 1,000, The Catered Affair works with each client to create an individually distinctive and memorable event.
