“Anything is possible if you’re motivated and passionate about business”

The Commonwealth Institute was pleased to host Suzanne Bates, President and CEO of Bates Communications, as the keynote speaker of our annual Midsummer Networking event.  Bates spoke to a crowd of 70 women entrepreneurs and executives, sharing the lessons she has learned as a business owner.

Gail Sullivan, a TCI CEO Forum member and Principal of Studio G Architects, kicked-off the evening.  As the president of an architecture company, Gail recognized that the strength of her creative vision often outweighed her business expertise.  Gail credits her CEO Forum experience as an “on the street MBA” and that the group continues to challenge her to think strategically on behalf of her business.

After a welcome by Marilyn Corbin, Senior Vice President at Citizens Bank, Suzanne Bates began her presentation, based on her new book Motivate Like a CEO: Communicate Your Strategic Vision and Inspire People to Act!  Bates is a recognizable face in the Boston area having served as a news anchor for WBZ-TV and immediately told the group that when she left television in 2000, she had never been in a “real job”.  She launched Bates Communications upon realizing that her television career had run its course and found passion in starting her own company after a series of informational interviews – “Anything is possible if you’re motivated and passionate about business” she said.

Highlighting examples of companies like Monster.com and Starbucks, Bates made the case that you can’t wait around for lightning to strike.  You need to be curious and ready to embark on a journey that will lead to discovery.  By knowing your passion, you can then turn that passion into motivation, and, in turn, share that motivation with others.

Bates turned the presentation over to the audience by asking people to answer one of the following:

What’s a real challenge in your business right now?

or

When you get up in the morning, what are you excited about?

Guests shared their responses with each other and the volume in the room increased with the passion and excitement with which people talked about their businesses.  Bates concluded the program by sharing the following takeaways:

    • Great companies were started in past recessions – the current economic climate is not an excuse!
    • Understand that what motivates you might not necessarily motivate others.  Know your vision and how to articulate it to help others “buy into it”.  Communication is essential!
    • Create a “visibility plan” – translate your big idea into a visible idea.  You can do so with the help of blogs, twitter, and speaking engagements, to name a few.
    • With limited time and resources, make priorities:  Set intention, schedule intention, and honor intention.
