Thank you for joining us for the kick-off of our 2010 Leadership Luncheon series which celebrates the art, character, and spirit of leading, both professionally and personally. The theme of the first lunch is "The Power of Self-Trust" and attendees had the opportunity to hear how successful leaders rely on self-trust, which ultimately strengthens their resolve to lead in a unique and effective way. Regardless of career level and industry, anyone who aspires to lead will benefit from the insightful comments of the featured speakers who illustrate the importance of personal inquiry and acceptance. We are all leaders in our own way and by better understanding ourselves, we can harness our own strengths to become stronger leaders. You will definitely walk away with food for thought and some practical ideas to implement in your own life!
Our invited guest speaker was Donna Sams, SVP, Corporate Systems at CVS Caremark, who provided personal anecdotes to which all professionals could relate. Donna was joined by current participants in TCI's Leadership Accelerator Program (LEAP) who shared the lessons learned from a Leader Mentor and a Leader Mentee, respectively.
Recap of the event:
Ann Lindsey, Mentor in the LEAP program and TCI Forum Leader, shared with the audience that the power of LEAP lies in the fact that real change occurs in the context of a relationship, especially those that are non-judgmental like the mentee and mentor relationship. As an individual, you will eventually start to listen to yourself with empathy and this will help you forgive yourself for any issues you carry with you, and help you gain coping mechanisms to deal with change over time, and this self-trust leads to determination, acceptance and worthiness in oneself. Serena Powell, LEAP Mentee, continued the conversation on self-trust by praising LEAP for being focused on yourself as an individual. She also reminded us that work gives people purpose and instills hope, and reminded us to build our own networks because they help open doors. Donna Sams, our invited guest speaker and SVP Corporate Systems at CVS Caremark, continued the discussion on self-trust, and shared with us that self-trust is a journey. She learned that you don’t learn experience, but rather experience is what you learn from. When you look back, you realize how much you didn’t know. But, it also reminds you of all the times you put your mind to something and actually did it. Key learnings in life come out of making decisions, and it’s important to have a plan, but set out to achieve things and cherish the path. If you focus too much on just achieving you could miss a learning opportunity on the journey. She left us with the sentiment to always remember that the things we learn along the way belong to us, and that experiences are so powerful because we get to keep them forever. Figure out what drives you every day and know that we as people are powerful beyond measure. Thank you to all of our featured speakers!
