Communicating in a Wired World
By Helene Solomon, President and CEO Solomon McCown & Company
We see it in the workplace--our "millennial" or "Gen Y" employees are completely entrenched and at ease with the bevy of social media tools available. They communicate, share ideas and network via internet applications that are rapidly morphing into new innovations. The degree of knowledge a business has about these tools can affect its success in disseminating information, positioning executives as thought leaders and raising its overall profile in a crowded landscape. With baby boomers growing more adept at the latest technologies and millenials poised to be our future leaders, it's important to get out in front of the curve in order to capture this techno-savvy audience. Here are five cost-effective steps you can oncorporate into your practice: 1. Add an online media room page to your website. This should include current bios, product information, recent media coverage, and a complete contact list so it's easy to learn about the firm. Press releases should contain hyperlinks amd key words to optomize web searches and drive traffic to the site. 2. Network. This is possible online through sites like LinkedIn, so journalists, investors, and potential clients can find you and your business. 3. Monitor industry blogs to know what the "blogosphere" is thinking. To establish authority, post comments on respected blog sites or develop your own. 4. Use social networking sites to your advantage. Social networking sites such as YouTube, MySpace, or Second Life have interesting applications in the right circumstances. Understand how these sites can be used to promote a product, highlight a thought leader, or connect with other groups. 5. Jump in! Don't be afraid to try something new, such as a podcast. Even if it isn't applicable to your business now, learning about it could be useful for the future. Technology is moving at a fast and furious pace. Those who get in the game early can leverage an important method of communiation that is just a click away. |
