General Facts Concerning Women in Business

Center for Women's Business Research – founded as the National Foundation for Women Business Owners – is the premier source of knowledge on women business owners and their firms worldwide. Its mission is to support the growth of women business owners and their enterprises through conduction research, sharing information and increasing knowledge.

 

The Center projects the following statistical portrait of majority owned, privately-held women-owned businesses in Miami in 2004:

 

  • There are nearly 76,738 Women-owned firms in Miami, accounting for nearly 28.1% of all privately held firms in the metropolitan area.

  • Women-owned firms in Miami employ almost 75,063 people and generate nearly $13 billion in sales.

  • The Center estimates that there are 14,506 women-owned employer firms in Miami. The number of these firms grew by 55.1% from 1997 to 2004.

  • Miami ranks 21 st among the top 50 metropolitan areas in average overall size, and 13 th for average growth of women owned firms.

  • As of 2004, there are an estimated 6.7 million majority-owned, privately-held women-owned firms in the U.S., employing 9.8 million people and generating $1.2 trillion in sales.

  • Women-owned firms continue to diversify into all industries. Construction, agriculture and transportation have seen the largest recent increases in the number of women-owned firms, although services and retail still make up the largest share of women-owned firms.

  • As of 2004, there are an estimated 1.4 million firms owned by a woman or women of ethnic diversity – amounting to 1 in 5 women-owned firms (21%) in the U.S. Overall, the number of minority women-owned firms increased by 55% between 1997 and 2004 – four times faster than all U. S. firms and over twice the rate of all women-owned firms.

  • In research conducted internationally, women business owners' voice similar needs for their business' development – access to capital, access to education/training, access to networks and markets, and to be taken seriously.

  • Women with businesses of $1 million or more in revenues are twice as likely as their male counterparts to seek advice from a mentor.
